Mongolian adventure for mum of Skye stunt cyclist Danny MacAskill

Anne and Kay will travel 10,000 miles

Skye-born stunt cyclist Danny MacAskill may grab the headlines but his mother, Anne, will soon embark on a perilous adventure of her own.

On 16th July the 67-year-old, who lives in Dunvegan in Skye, will set off with friend Kay Simpson on the 10,000-mile Mongol Rally. The course will take them through Europe and Asia to finish in the Russian town of Ulan Ude no later than 12th September.

The duo, known as the ‘Gallivanting Quines’, will be driving a 22-year-old Renault Espace, sourced in the Netherlands and currently being fixed up in Glasgow.

Kay, a former vet on Skye, and her husband Duncan Strachan had been planning to enter the rally for their 70th birthdays. However, he died in an accident in Spain three years ago.

“Kay asked me to do it and I said yes straight away,” said Anne. “We come from neighbouring farms in Fife and I was her bridesmaid. You don’t say no to a friend, do you?”

Anne will turn 68 during the drive and she plans to have a celebration along the way. She will be raising money for Cancer Research and Wings for Life; Kay will be fundraising for Animals Asia.
