The Coigach Community Development Company are seeking to turn the former Achiltibuie Schoolhouse into two flats.
In October last year the property – which has lain vacant since the retirement of the previous head teacher in 2012 – was transferred to community ownership through CCDC. The Highland Small Communities Trust are now acting as agents for the CCDC and will oversee the proposed conversion into a one-bedroom flat on the ground floor and two-bed on the upper level.
A lack of rental accommodation has been a challenge in Coigach for some time, with the last social housing created in the 1970s. House prices are usually beyond the reach of local people with the scenic, coastal area attracting high prices for second or holiday homes. This point is made in the design statement attached to the application, which notes: “This project is seen by the community as an important contribution to providing affordable homes for young people and those employed in the area where so many houses are now used for holiday accommodation.”
