MacAskill pipped by skydiver

CYCLING---DANNY-MACASKILLA skydive of over 40 kilometres saw off Skye trials cyclist Danny MacAskill to win the Laureus world action sportsperson of the year award at a ceremony in Shanghai last week.

Danny (pictured) was shortlisted in the category for his jaw-dropping bike tricks which have been seen by millions of people around the world, having previously been nominated for the same award in 2011.

However, the award went to American computer scientist Alan Eustace for his skydive in October last year when he jumped from 135,889 feet (41.4km) to break Felix Baumgartner’s 2012 world record for the highest freefall jump. Following a balloon-powered ascent, Eustace’s jump to Earth lasted 15 minutes with speeds exceeding 821.45 mph.
Other winners on the night included Novak Djokovic and Genzebe Dibaba, who were named sportsman and sportswoman of the year.
