The final of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year competition will be screened on BBC Alba this Monday.
Sunday’s final, hosted by Mary Ann Kennedy, will see six people vie for the top prize at the Grand Hall in Glasgow City Halls, with the event taking place as part of the Celtic Connections Festival.
The finalists are: Skye fiddler Seamus O’Baioghill; singer Ainsley Hamill from Cardross; Claire Hastings of Dumfries (song); Gemma Donald (Shetland) on fiddle; clarsach player Heather Downie from Dunblane; and fiddler Ryan Young, also Cardross.
BBC Alba’s coverage will be broadcast on Monday 2nd February from 9pm, with the finalists each performing for 15 minutes in a concert setting. The winner will be awarded a recording session with BBC Scotland, a performance at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards and one year’s membership of the Musicians Union. All finalists get one year’s membership of the Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland plus the opportunity to take part in the TMSA’s annual Young Trad Tour.
