Lightning zaps historic Skye ruin

A bolt of lightning blasted a chunk out of the ruins of Castle Moil in Kyleakin this week.

The damage to the ancient stronghold of the Clan MacKinnon was captured by Reverend Duncan Barwise, a Church of Scotland minister from Vancouver Island in Canada who is on a six-month term as a locum in Kyle.

Rev Barwise and his wife Joan are staying near the slipway in Kyleakin and took their photos on Wednesday night, during a hail storm.

“There were a lot of lightning flashes and then the floodlights around the castle went out – it was quite extraordinary,” he said.

The Reverend’s photos show before and after the lightning struck. The ruin’s missing masonry is clearly visible.
