Hundreds of investors have ploughed almost £800,000 into the Applecross hydro scheme, which is due to begin supplying the national grid with electricity by early next month.

Alasdair Macleod, a director of community benefit society Apple Juice, said they have had to turn down investors “left right and centre” since the share issue deadline was reached on Thursday of last week.

“We’re having to return people’s cheques and could easily have raised over £1 million,”  he added. “At one point we raised £250,000 in the space of two days.”

A team from Scottish and Southern Energy will visit Applecross within the next two weeks to connect the 90-kilowatt hydro project at Allt Breugach.
