Flòraidh MacPhail was appointed as the new Bàrd of An Comunn Gàidhealach at the Mòd in Oban today (Wednesday). Flòraidh, who becomes the Mòd’s 55th Bàrd, is well-known in the Gaelic community and is the mother of Angus MacPhail of the popular band Skipinnish. The Bàrd is an honorary role awarded to someone who has made a significant contribution to Gaelic literature. Wednesday is literature day at the annual Gaelic showcase. Also among the award winners was Christina Mackenzie from Stornoway, who was named at Gaelic learner of the year. In a break from tradition the Gold Medal singing finals will take place tonight, with the Traditional Medal contest taking centre stage on Thursday.
