Is Kyle’s Bertie the oldest player in Scotland?

Defender Bertie Urquhart celebrated his 62nd birthday on Saturday — by helping his current team Kyle earn a draw against his old club Plockton.

A mainstay of the football scene for decades, Bertie is by some distance the oldest player now playing in the Skye and Lochalsh League.

Bertie has, over the years, served both Kyle and Plockton with distinction, playing local football in five different decades.

The Scottish Amateur Football Association has been unable to say whether there is anyone older still playing regular amateur football in the country — but that Bertie’s achievements are worthy of praise is surely without question.
