Snow fails to dampen spirits at Glenmore fun runs and 10k

A hardy band of runners braved the elements to take part in the Skye and Lochalsh Running Club’s Glenmore 10k and fun runs in Portree last Saturday.

In the first race of the day, a small group of fun-runners set off into a heavy wind, winding their way one-mile up the Struan Hill Road before retracing their steps, happily with the wind behind them, back to the Camanachd Clubhouse.  In first place was Joe Jones in 13 minutes and 19 seconds; followed by Tristan and Sam Crowe (14.12), Tabitha and Alex Jones (19.20) and Cailean and James Stephenson (23.36).

At noon, the 10k and 4-mile runners set off into the chilly wind.  The 4-mile race was won by Alexander Laing in 30 minutes and 33 seconds.  In second place was Clara Connell (34.10) and third was Kirsty Watt (35.48).

The 10k runners set  an excellent pace on  the tough Glenmore hill course.  In first place was Dean MacLeod in 42 minutes and three seconds, closely followed by Gareth Craft (42:21) and Chris James (42.36). First woman home was Iona Craft in a time of 47 minutes and 30 seconds, with Gill Houlsby in second (51.50) and Marina Gordon in third (52.12).
Thanks go to all the marshals who also braved the elements to ensure the safety of the runners, the coastguard for the race support vehicle, everyone who produced soup, bread and baking for the runners in the clubhouse afterwards, and to Inside Out who donated some of the prizes. The next race in the Skye and Lochalsh Running Club’s winter series is the Glenbrittle 10-mile trail race, which takes place this Saturday (7th February).
