Volunteers needed at Lochalsh foodbank

The South Skye and Lochalsh Foodbank is appealing for volunteers.

The foodbank, based in the Lighthouse Centre in Kyle, is open every Friday between 11am and 1pm, and sees referred clients receive a package tailored to their personal needs.

Organisers will hold a “role play” session today (Thursday) at 7.30pm to guide new volunteers through the process of manning the foodbank, and anyone interested in offering their time is invited to attend. Volunteers work in teams of two and full training is given.

Lynne Kearns from the South Skye and Lochalsh Foodbank said: “Manning of the foodbank is incredibly important as volunteers will be the first people clients will meet when they call in to collect their food. We present a friendly, understanding and  non-judgemental face in the first instance followed by putting together a food package to suit each individual person’s or family’s needs.

“We have around 10 volunteers at the moment, plus others willing to help with stock control and making home deliveries when required. But we urgently need more volunteers as our existing ones often have other commitments such as holidays and appointments.”

She added: “It is referral only – from doctors, nurses, ministers, social services, etc – but if people are unsure how to be referred they are quite welcome to drop in on a Friday to be pointed in the right direction.”
