Guineafowl starring as Sleat attraction

Visitors to Clan Donald Skye are being entertained by the antics of an unusual new addition to the Sleat attraction.

Ten Helmeted Guineafowl, native to West Africa, have been hatched out and hand-reared by general manager Stephen McKeown (pictured) and now patrol the lawn in front of the castle, mixing happily with visitors.

Stephen said: “They’ve become a real attraction and must now be the most photographed animals on Skye. Children particularly are fascinated with them.”

However, Clan Donald’s resident peacock is less impressed. “He gives them a wide berth,” Stephen said. “Maybe because they have a reputation for sticking together and ganging up on enemies and competitors.”
