Campbell leads home record field in Skye half marathon

Hugh Campbell  stormed his way to a fourth Skye Half Marathon win last weekend, leading home a record field of 450 runners in the annual race.

The Portree runner set a new local best time of one hour, 11 minutes and six seconds to retain the title he won last year.

In an excellent race Campbell was pushed hard by Gordon Lennox of Forres Harriers, who eventually had to settle for runner-up spot in 1.12.56. Andrew Lawrence from Morpeth Harriers took third place in 1.13.40, with the top eight runners all recording times under the one hour and 20-minute mark.

Campbell said an altered approach to training had improved his running this year, with his progress – under coach Karen Macleod – qualifying him for championship entry to next year’s London Marathon.
He said: “I am not stuck to a rigid schedule like I was previously. This more relaxed approach seems to be working well for me and was a big reason why I ran so well on Saturday.

“Another reason for the quick time was the strong competition from Forres Harriers’ Gordon Lennox. I am delighted to retain my title again for the fourth time and maintain my 100 per cent win record.”
Campbell will now turn his focus to preparing for the Great North Run in September and the Great Scottish Run in October.

“My intention is to try to break 70 minutes and run a personal best at either of these races,” he added. “I am also hoping to run the London Marathon next year as my time qualifies me for championship entry.”
Skye and Lochalsh Running Club’s Jeremy Rossiter also recorded a top 10 finish, coming home seventh in 1.17.21. The third local man home was James MacInnes, in 1.25.45.

Top female runner was Anne Hartman in 1.28.37, with Linlithgow’s Charlotte Fortune in second place and Portobello’s Yana Thandrayen third. Broadford’s Carol Benson was the top local female in a time of 1.43.36, with Sam Crowe second and Iona MacKinnon third.
