After a gap of over 50 years, a new young farmers’ group has been established on Skye.
The first annual general meeting of the Skye Young Farmers took place in Portree last Monday and saw the election of a management committee to take the group forward.
The new committee members are: chairman, Danny Macdonald from Achachork; Chris Campbell of Drynoch, vice-chair; Kerry Campbell from Portree, treasurer; David Maclean from Sconser will act as secretary; and Austin Little from Portree is assistant secretary.
Also attending the meeting were Katherine Marr, national chair of the Scottish Association of Young Farmers and regional events manager Fiona Gibson.
Interest in re-forming a Skye branch of the young farmers was first raised last year. The clubs, for those aged 14 to 30, are peer-led, allowing members the chance to decide what type of events they wish to be involved with, so promoting confidence and skills.
The Skye Young Farmers will become part of the Ross Sutherland, Nairn and Inver Ross district and it is hoped the first district meeting with the new club will be held on Skye.
Following this the first north competition for Skye Young Farmers will be the Highland Rally on Saturday 31st May. A variety of competitions will be held at the rally including stock-judging, football, halter-making, baking and arts and crafts.
