South West Ross piping event attracts highest number of entries

Last Saturday’s 48th annual South West Ross Piping Competition attracted a record number of entries as competitors travelled from as far afield as Uist, Fort William and Inverness.

Held in Plockton High School’s Hostel, the competition attracted a record 27 pipers in the under-15 events while the chanter and under-18 piping events also attracted a good level of competitors.

Having taken first place in the Piobaireachd and March, Strathspey and Reel events and second place in the Jig, Brighde Caimbeul from Kyle was the clear winner of the under-18 section.

In the under-15 class Rona Nicolson commanded a strong lead, having placed first in four events and second in the other. Rona is formerly from Portree but now lives in Ardgour.

The beginners’ chanter competi­tion was won by Iain Cormack from Portree and advanced chanter by Katherine Dibble from Broadford. Archie MacLean from Edinbane won the novice piping competition.
Judging on the day were Decker Forrest from Sleat, Colin Campbell and Archie MacLean of Inverness and Moira Robertson from Fort William.
