A squad of nine young athletes from Lewis travelled last weekend to the National Indoor Age Groups Championships, held in Glasgow.
Despite a long trip down in inclement weather, the island group acquitted themselves very well and recorded several “personal bests” on the track.
The team which travelled were Abbie MacKay, Jenny Mactaggart, Alasdair Rigby, Ross Mactaggart, Andrew Horne, Jonathan Morrison, Mary MacLeod, Catriona Rigby and Ross Budge.
Uist athletes were also well represented, the pick of the bunch being Heather Marie MacKinnon who finished fourth in the under-16 long jump — missing out on bronze by 17 centimetres.
Stornoway club coach Seumas Mactaggart said: “It was a truly great weekend of fine performances and multi-personal bests from the Stornoway Running and Athletics Club juniors and sets them up really well for the 2014 outdoor season which start in April.
“As the sprinters and jumpers now take a week’s rest before getting back into training and working towards that, there’s a sizeable squad of the club’s cross-country runners – both juniors and seniors – heading for Falkirk for the National championships this weekend. It’s a busy time for the red and gold of SRAC.”
