Indoor triumph gets Skye ladies off to a flying start

Skye Ladies got their season off to a flying start last weekend, winning the 17th annual Johnstone Indoor Tournament in Fort William.

Hosted by the Glengarry Girls, the five-a-side competition in the Nevis Centre attracted 11 teams from across the country, including two from Skye Ladies. Other clubs attending included Lovat, Glengarry, Lochaber, Badenoch and Strathspey, Dunadd, Strathglass and Oban, the last making a return to competitive shinty after a short break.

Teams were drawn into two leagues with the top two teams from each league progressing to the semi-finals, the first of which saw League A winners Glengarry A take on League B runners-up, Skye B. The Skye side had done extremely well in their league group, racking up wins against everyone except the league winners Dunadd B.

Glengarry’s experience paid off and they secured a 10-0 victory over the islanders and a place in the final.

The second semi-final saw League B winners Dunadd B face League A runners-up Skye A. Skye started off slowly and Dunadd took advantage to put the Skye defence under attack. Skye held firm, however, and soon turned the tide, Lorna Macrae scoring five and Ilana Paterson a brace to seal a 7-1 victory.

The final between Glengarry A and Skye A saw end to end play but Skye were 3-1 up at half time thanks to a Macrae hat-trick. Glengarry rallied and pulled two back but a fourth from Lorna Macrae secured the win for Skye, who were presented with the Rose Bowl by tournament sponsor Ailsa Johnston.
Lorna Macrae was also named player of the tournament.

The Glengarry Girls have extended their thanks to all the teams involved for making the day such a success and invited them back for next year’s tournament, to be held on Saturday 31st January.
Thanks were also given to referees Graham Cameron and Duncan Kelly.
