Residents of the Bethesda Nursing Home and Hospice in Stornoway were given a New Year treat when they were entertained by seven-year-old Harris girl Isla Scott, who won two gold medals at the National Mod in Paisley last year for recitation and singing.
The two pieces were composed by one of the Bethesda residents, Margaret Hulse from Stornoway — a Mod Gold Medallist at Dunoon in 1968.
She was too ill at the time to see Isla perform on television at the Mod last year. So Isla’s grandfather, John Murdo Morrison from Tarbert — who won the Gold Medal at the Largs Mod in 1965 — decided that he would take his granddaughter to Stornoway so that she could perform her two prizewinning pieces for Margaret. Her mother, Sara, presented Margaret with a bouquet of flowers and John Murdo also sang one of his witty Gaelic songs.
Also present was another Mod Gold Medallist, Alma Kerr from Stornoway, who won the coveted award at the Glasgow Mod in 1958 and who regularly visits Margaret in the nursing home.
