Plockton High School stormed into the next round of the Highlands and Islands Schools’ Bowl with an impressive 58-5 victory over Tain Academy last Wednesday.
The west-coast youngsters were in free-scoring form, running in 10 tries on the day. Ali Nixon claimed two touch-downs, while Scott MacLennan, Davis Glover, Robin Harvey, Donald MacAskill, Fraser Kitson-Jones, Jonnie MacAskill, Douglas Campbell and Kenny Cushnie all registered scores.
Fergus Dobson, guesting at fly-half for Tain, replied for the visitors with a consolation score late in the game.
It is a credit to the coaching the boys receive at junior level that the stand-out performers on the day for both teams came from Plockton High School. Rowan Myers with his strong, direct running from second row was the platform for much of Plockton’s attacking play, ensuring quality ball was always available at the breakdown. Meanwhile, the physical presence of Ali Nixon and creativity of Robin Harvey at half-backs made best use of all the ball that came their way.
Man of the match, however, was Plockton’s young Fergus Dobson guesting for a depleted Tain squad – his clever, tactical kicking and ability to spot gaps in the Plockton defence was pivotal in making sure his team-mates never lost heart and stayed competitive during most of the game.
