Crowd gathers to compete in Colonel Jock Memorial Festival

Young singers and musicians from across Skye and Lochalsh gathered in Portree recently for the annual Colonel Jock Memorial Festival.

Most competitions were well subscribed, with piping attracting a total of 69 entries. The Admiral’s Cup  for the most promising junior piper was presented to Finn MacPherson from Kyleakin while Cameron Sharp from Plockton achieved the most points of a mainland piper, having come first in Grade A competitions for March, Strathspey and Reel and Piobaireachd and third in the Open Jig section. Portree’s Frieda McKiggan achieved the most points for a Skye entrant, coming second in the  March and third in the Strathspey and Reel and Piobaireachd competitions for Grade A.

A total of 21 entrants were heard in the Gaelic singing events, with Erin Gillies from Staffin the winner in the eight to 10 age group. There was more success for Staffin when Isla NicLeoid topped the 11-12 section while Mairead Smith from Portree scooped the over 12 years  competition. The most promising singer award went to Kathleen NicDhomhnaill from Bernisdale.

In the fiddle competition there were 31 entries, with Rowan Sharp of Plockton named the most promising player. As there were only five clarsach entries it was decided to hold an informal recital rather than a competition, which was organised by Eilidh MacKenzie.
